Technology

Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) is a group of materials with very interesting material characteristics, low weight, high strength and excellent heat behaviour. Since the invention in the 1970-ies, the use has been limited, primarily due to problems to machine the material in order to get the final shape and tolerances. During the 1990-ies it was found that the concept of High Speed Machining (HSM) was useful to machine MMC and Saab, pioneers in the HSM area, patented a method. With this innovation the cost effective machining challenge was solved.

The driving force to use MMC in applications is weight savings and/or reduction of the number of components by utilizing the superior properties of MMC. Read more about applications within engines.
